Reader Submissions: Writing Prompt Challenge for April 2010

From Scot Overton

Small Steps & A Warm Summer (Two Poems)

Greetings from Sleepy Hollow

Introduction

I love to read a well written poem, novel or news report.

I appreciate the wonder and power of the written word.

I approached the prompt timidly as a learning process and a way of improving my writing and it's style.

Your Submission

Small Steps

Small steps
one day.
Will begin with
long strides.
Steps once taken
by a baby.
Now strides
of an old man.
A seed is planted
to one day stand a tall oak.
Like a dream
becoming reality.

A Warm Summer

A warm summer
breeze blows through your hair.
Then changes into a gale
slapping at your face.
Pleasant thoughts of another
become a kind, good deed.
Feelings and beliefs
grow slowly into bold action.
An idea forms
into soft words.
Sung so brilliantly
in a love song.
Affection becomes passion
which grows into
a smile shared
to be shared a lifetime.
A gesture of kindness
nurtures forth a good habit.
Devotion becomes
love and compassion.

Lessons Learned

  • Write as if you were speaking to a loved one.
  • Easy, slow -- simple words with hidden meanings.
  • draw pictures with your pen and ink in words . . . instead with a brush on it easel.
  • do research.. to describe a horse one should perhaps first visit a stable. likewise with a beach . . . get sand between you toes, than describe the feeling . . . the summer breeze that blew though your hair.
  • have respect for your reader and make their time with you well worth it.
  • try to make them turn the page.. or at least read on.
  • be thankful that someone is reading what you have written.
