Submit Work to What If?

By Ginny Wiehardt, About.com

What If? Basics:
A Canadian Children’s Book Centre "2008 Best Books for Kids and Teens" magazine selection, What If? publishes Canadian fiction, poetry, photography, and art for ages 12 and up. What If? is published four times each year and seeks to inspire, enlighten, and entertain young readers by presenting them with the work of their peers.
Submit to What If?:
What If? is currently accepting material from Canadians 19 years old and under. Though they accept stories of up to 3,000 words, they prefer stories of fewer than 2,000 words. Poems should fit on one page of the journal. Be sure to have your name, mailing address, telephone number, age, and email address on your submission. They prefer email submissions, but will accept snail mail and fax submissions as well. See their site for full details.
Writing Sample from "Death by Pencils" by Sarah McComb:
"'Tell me again why we're out here, Jeff.' Roberta Berkeley presses her forehead against the cool glass of the car window, watching sparse trees and telephone poles fly past. She hasn't seen any signs of life for the past hour; just an old house that was barely even standing and a beaver dam. 'It seems like they're trying to get rid of us. Again.' Her voice has a sour edge. Every pothole that they encounter jars her mood even more."
