October finds us in the middle of contest season. Keep up with this month's short story contests, residencies, awards, and fellowships with the list below. As always, click through for application details.

  • American Antiquarian Society (AAS) Fellowships for Historical Research -- October 5
    The AAS is calling for applications for visiting fellowships for historical research by creative and performing artists, writers, film makers, journalists, and other persons whose goals are to produce imaginative, non-formulaic works dealing with pre-twentieth-century American history. The fellowships provide recipients with a period of uninterrupted research, reading, and collegial discussion at the Society, located in Worcester, Massachusetts. No application fee.

  • The Bellwether Prize for Fiction -- October 1
    U.S. citizens with some publication record, but without a substantial book publication may submit an original, previously unpublished novel at least 80,000 words in length. $25.00 processing fee.

  • Black Warrior Review Writing Contests -- October 1
    Two prizes each of $1,000 and publication in Black Warrior Review for previously unpublished stories. Send your entry to: Fiction Contest, Black Warrior Review, Box 862936, Tuscaloosa, AL 35486. $15.00 entry fee includes one-year subscription.

  • Boston Review Short Story Contest -- October 1
    A prize of $1,500 and publication in the Boston Review is given to one writer each year for a story of no more than 4,000 words. Send submissions to: Short-Story Contest, Boston Review, 35 Medford St., Suite 302, Somerville, MA 02143. $20.00 entry fee.

  • Bronx Writers' Center -- October 1
    Four prizes of $1,000 each to emerging novelists residing in NYC. Submit four copies of your entry to: "Chapter One," The Bronx Writers' Center, c/o The Westchester Square Public Library, 2521 Glebe Avenue Bronx, NY 10461. No entry fee.

  • Dogwood Poetry and Fiction Prizes -- October 15.
    Prize of $1,000 and publication. All entrants will be considered for publication. Submit stories up to 7,500 words to: Kim Bridgford, Editor, Dogwood, English Dept., Fairfield University, North Benson Rd., Fairfield, CT 06824-5195. $10.00 reading fee.

  • Harvard University Radcliffe Institute Fellowships -- October 1
    Support scholars, scientists, artists, and writers of exceptional promise and demonstrated accomplishments who wish to pursue work in academic and professional fields and in the creative arts. Stipends up to $60,000. Apply via mail or online. No entry fee.

  • Indiana Review Fiction Prize -- October 14
    Submit unpublished short stories of up to 35 pages to Fiction Prize, Indiana Review, Ballantine Hall 465, 1020 E. Kirkwood Ave., Bloomington, IN 47405-7103. $15.00 reading fee includes one-year subscription.

  • Inkwell Short Fiction Competition -- October 30
    $1500 prize and publication in Inkwell. Submit up to three short stories for up to 5,000 words to INKWELL, Manhattanville College, 2900 Purchase Street, Purchase, NY 10577. $15.00 reading fee.

  • Christopher Isherwood Foundation Fiction Fellowships -- October 1
    Grants awarded to writers who have published at least one book of fiction to enable writers to set aside time for writing. Mail completed applications to: James White, Christopher Isherwood Foundation, 1708 21st Ave South #301, Nashville, TN 37212. No entry fee.
