Punctuating Dialogue

From Ginny Wiehardt, About.com GuideOctober 24, 2010

In posting and commenting on stories for the challenges this fall, I've noticed that a number of people are understandably confused about how to punctuate dialogue, and when to start a new paragraph (generally every time you switch speakers). I've made corrections when I can, but I also want to highlight an article on punctuating dialogue, designed to clear up some of the confusion.

If you know this article is for you, don't feel bad. It's a very common problem, perhaps because the rules can be and are broken effectively in published prose. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. First, learn the rules, and then consider breaking them. Click through the link above to review the basics.
