Readers Respond: Writing Contests or Literary Journals?

What's your opinion on the matter? Do you think it's wiser to enter contests or to submit directly to publications? Or vice-versa? Or perhaps it's best to submit both ways?

Can't Afford Contests

Contests with $15 or $20 entry fees become prohibitively expensive for the writer who wants to publish as much as possible. I'll enter a contest if I truly love the publication and want to support it. But I view the money spent as a subscription cost or a charitable contribution. If publishing my own stories is the primary goal, then I'll skip the contests and do direct submissions.
