Story Starters from Our Readers

By , About.com Guide

Almost everyone could use a little help in filling a blank page from time to time. The following story starters were all submitted by readers, in response to a blog post in April. Choose one and see where it takes you. You might be surprised.

3. What's in your fridge?

4. Every morning a crow comes and sits at my window.

5. Write a story from an “odd news” headline.

(A creative writing teacher named Daisee sent in this excellent idea. For her class, she had a different student bring in a prompt every week. The next three were brought in by students.)

6. Write a story revolving around a song title.

7. Opening phrases

Sometimes all you need is a few words to get you started. Use one of these opening phrases to launch a story you never would have written otherwise.
