Description Writing Exercise

From , former About.com Guide

Most writers have to work to develop their powers of description: evoking an image through words is no easy task. For this exercise, spend some time describing the most memorable person you've ever met. Include both physical and psychological characteristics, and be as detailed as possible.

After a few days have passed, go back to what you've written and note what's particularly vivid and what's unclear -- or even what seems extraneous -- and edit. (But wait few days for this step. Right now, just let the words spill.) To build on this description, keep this person in mind and complete the exercise "Hands."

If you really want to work on description, however, take time regularly to describe things you've seen that day or week. Keep a notebook. The things you jot down in it may not add up to a story, but who knows? You may find yourself returning to your notebooks later, to jog your memory or steal words from your younger self.
