New Moon Girls Basics:
Praised as "charming and upbeat" by the Utne Reader, New Moon Girls is a website and magazine written by and for girls aged 8-15. Both strive to present safe, educational material free of advertising. The magazine was begun in 1992 with two parents and an editorial board of 20 girls. When the online component launched in 2007, New Moon Publishing became New Moon Girl Media. It's still governed by a board of 'tween and teen girls.
Subscribe to New Moon Girls:
Subscriptions, or memberships, are $29.95 and include six issues of the print magazine and access to the site, where teens can share poetry, artwork, videos, and other creative work, and participate in moderated forums, quizzes, and polls.
Submit to New Moon Girls:
Articles and stories should be 600-1200 words and poetry should be one page or less. Check the magazine for upcoming themes: you have a better chance of being accepted if your work fits with their future plans. Include your full name and address, as well as a parental consent form, which can be found on the website. All work is considered for both the website and the print magazine.
Writing Sample from "The Three Gold Bands" by Jessica Chase:
The great Chielir wrapped her tentacles around the trembling 12-year-old. In an instant, Josie was inside a bright splash of light. Then, there was complete darkness and Josie could see nothing, feel nothing, and hear nothing. But soon there was another splash of light, and her senses functioned once more. She looked around. "Where are we?"
