By Ginny Wiehardt, About.com

Cicada Magazine Basics:
A literary magazine for young adults ages 14 and up, Cicada publishes the poetry and prose of adults and teens, side by side. It also hosts an online writing forum called "The Slam."

Cicada is published by Cricket Magazine Group, which began over thirty years ago with the publication of a magazine for children, Cricket. Cicada was launched in 1998.

Submit Work to Cicada:
While the editors re-examine "the scope, focus, and format of Cicada," the magazine isn't accepting submissions. They do urge aspiring writers to check back periodically, as this will change.
Subscribe to Cicada:
Six issues of Cicada run $33.95: order a subscription through their website. Your school or town library may also subscribe, so talk to your librarian.
Mini-Review by Leah R.:

"Cicada has great poems and excellent stories -- I often finish it and turn the last page again, wishing there were more. Recently they changed the format from a small, compact book-like magazine to a more traditional full-size magazine format. There are no advertisements, which is nice, but they also do a lot of classic short stories by well-known authors, like Stephen Crane and Victor Hugo, instead of modern authors, which I don't really like. The stories are generally well-written, about contemporary themes or sometimes more fantastical plots, but practically all of them have good substance to them and hold my interest."
