- Ramble Underground Short Fiction Contest -- November 15
Publication in Ramble Underground and cash awards, the amount of which varies with the number of entries (a minimum of $50). Apply online; 2500 words max. $6 entry fee.
- The Story Prize -- November 15
A prize of $20,000 for a collection of short fiction written in English and published in the past year. Publishers, authors, or agents may enter eligible works of short fiction. $75.00 entry fee for each work.
- Hurston/Wright Foundation Legacy Award -- November 17
Three prizes of $10,000 each are given annually to writers of African descent to honor a book of fiction, a first book of fiction, and a book of creative nonfiction published in the current year. Two finalists in each category will receive $5,000 each. Publishers may submit a novel, novella, short story collection, or memoir. A prize of at least $1,000 is given every three years for a short story that presents the gay and lesbian lifestyle in a positive manner and is based on a historic person or event. - Fish International Short Story Prize -- November 30
Prizes awarded by Fish Publishing, an Irish independent press. Winning authors will appear in an anthology; first prize is 3,000, but all winners receive a prize. Online entries only. 20.00 fee.

Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation New Jersey Writers' Fellowship -- November 30
Each year one New Jersey writer will be selected for a one-week to two-month residency at Ledig House, a residency in the Hudson River Valley. Submit bio, one-page description of work to be undertaken while at Ledig House, letter of recommendation, and either a copy of recently published work or an unpublished 10-page writing sample to Ledig House Applications, New Jersey Writers' Fellowship, 55 Fifth Avenue, 15th Floor, New York, NY 10003. - WOW! Women On Writing Fall 2008 Essay Writing Contest -- November 30
In fewer than 750 words, explain how recreating your personal space has changed your
life, or how making changes in your life has moved you to express yourself
and recreate your home. Awards: $200, $150, $100 plus gift certificates and goodie bags. Entry fee: $10, or $20 with critique.
