  • New Rivers Press MVP Competition -- November 1
    Three prizes of $1,000 each and a standard book contract for unpublished book-length manuscripts by emerging writers. Submit a manuscript of short stories, novellas, or personal essays of 100-200 pages; or a novel or memoir of any length to New Rivers Press, MVP Competition, 1104 Seventh Avenue South, Moorhead, MN 56563. No entry fee.

  • Princeton University Alfred Hodder Fellowships -- November 1
    Created specifically for humanists in the early stages of their careers, the Hodder Fellowship is awarded to two individuals per year who have demonstrated exceptional promise but have not yet received widespread recognition. Hodder Fellows spend a year in Princeton, teaching one course and pursuing independent projects. The stipend is $58,000. No entry fee.

  • Ramble Underground Short Fiction Contest -- November 15
    Publication in Ramble Underground and cash awards, the amount of which varies with the number of entries (a minimum of $50). Apply online; 2500 words max. $6 entry fee.

  • Reed Magazine John Steinbeck Award -- November 1
    $1,000 cash prize and publication in Reed Magazine for an unpublished short story of up to 6,000 words. Address submissions to: John Steinbeck Short Story Award, Reed Magazine, SJSU English Department, One Washington Square, San Jose, CA 95192-0090. $15.00 entry fee.

  • Roanoke Review Fiction Contest -- November 11
    Prize of $1,000 for the best short story; prize winner and runners-up will be published in the spring issue. Send stories (maximum of 8,000 words) to: Roanoke Review Contest, 221 College Lane, Salem, VA 24153. $15.00 entry fee.

  • Stanford Alumni Fiction Contest -- November 5
    Stanford offers ten two-year fellowships each year, five in fiction and five in poetry. Fellowships include a living stipend of $26,000 and required workshop tuition of approximately $6,500. Submit fiction manuscript, totaling no more than 9,000 words, composed of two short stories, one short story and a novel excerpt, or one novel excerpt to: Stanford University, Wallace Stegner Fellowships, Creative Writing Program, Stanford Creative Writing Program, 450 Serra Mall, Building 460, Stanford, CA 94305-2087. $50.00 application fee.

  • Stanford University Wallace Stegner Fellowships -- November 30
