Nebraska Arts Council Literature Award -- November 15
The Individual Artist Fellowships program (IAF) recognizes exemplary achievements by originating artists. The grant is designed to reward artists for work that has already been completed: see site for full details. No entry fee.

Ramble Underground Short Fiction Contest -- November 15
Publication in Ramble Underground and cash awards, the amount of which varies with the number of entries (a minimum of $50). Apply online; 2500 words max. $6 entry fee.

Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival Annual Fiction Contest -- November 16
$1,500, an all-access pass + airfare and accommodation to attend the New Orleans Literary Festival (March 24-48), and publication in the New Orleans Review, for unpublished short stories up to 7,000 words. $25 entry fee.

Hurston/Wright Foundation Legacy Award -- November 17
Three prizes of $10,000 each are given annually to writers of African descent to honor a book of fiction, a first book of fiction, and a book of creative nonfiction published in the current year. Two finalists in each category will receive $5,000 each. Publishers may submit a novel, novella, short story collection, or memoir. Ledig House Francis Greenburger Fellowship on Mitigating Religious and Ethnic Conflict -- November 20
Ledig House writers residency awards one fellowship to an artist whose work relates to managing and/or mitigating religious and ethnic conflict. Work made at Omi must be in direct relation to this area. See site for full details on fellowship and application to the residency. No application fee.

Arrowhead Regional Arts Council McKnight/ARAC Individual Artist Grants -- November 27
Six fellowships of up to $3,500 to pursue a specific opportunity. See site for details. No entry fee.

Birmingham-Southern College Hackney Short Story Award -- November 30
A prize of $5,000 for the best short story of 5,000 words or less. Mail entries to: Hackney Literary Awards, Birmingham-Southern College, Box 549066, Birmingham, AL 35254. Entry fee: $15.

Fish International Short Story Prize -- November 30
Prizes awarded by Fish Publishing, an Irish independent press. Winning authors will appear in an anthology; first prize is €3,000, but all winners receive a prize. Online entries only. €20.00 fee.

FolioAlley Story Challenge -- November 30
All stories and poems, submitted on FolioAlley by November 30, 2009, with "Alley Cats and Alley Rats" as the subject are automatically qualified to win the $500 prize. After your submission, it will be displayed on our Story Challenge page where folioalley members will have the opportunity to vote on it. The writing with the most votes wins. No entry fee.

Soul-Making Literary Competition -- November 30
The annual Soul-Making Literary Competition is an extended community arts outreach program of the National League of American Pen Women, Nob Hill, San Francisco Bay Area Branch. They seek original, finely crafted works of prose and poetry that embrace all creative interpretations of English poet, John Keats' statement, "Some say the world is a vale of tears, / I say it is a place of soul-making". WOW! Women On Writing Fall Flash Fiction Contest -- November 30
Submit 250-750 words on any topic. Awards of $100-$250 plus gift certificates and goodie bags. Entry fee: $10, or $20 with critique.
