  • New Millennium Awards for Fiction, Poetry, and Nonfiction -- June 17
    $1,000 for best poem, $1,000 for best fiction (including short-short fiction), $1,000 for best nonfiction, plus publication. Enter online, or offline, by submitting to: "NMW," Room M2, PO Box 2463, Knoxville, TN 37901. $17 reading fee.

  • Artist Trust Grants for Artist Projects (GAP) -- June 25
    Grants of $1500 awarded to artists of all disciplines in Washington State. A multidisciplinary panel of artists and arts professionals select GAP recipients. Applications available on their website.

  • Booktrust The Roald Dahl Funny Prize -- June 28
    "Founded by Michael Rosen as part of his work as Children's Laureate, "the Roald Dahl Funny Prize is the first prize founded to honour those books that simply make us laugh." Prizes of £2,500. See site for details.

  • The Bridport Prize -- June 30
    The Bridport Prize is an annual international creative writing competition for poetry and short stories. Prizes of £5000, £1000, and £500 for short stories of up to 5,000 words. Apply online or by post to The Bridport Prize, PO Box 6910, Bridport, Dorset DT6 9BQ, UK. Entry fee varies depending on category, from £5-£7.

  • Howard Frank Mosher Short Fiction Prize -- June 30
    One $1,000 prize winner receives publication in the fall issue of Hunger Mountain; two honorable mentions receive $100.00 each. Submit stories of no more than 10,000 words either online or via snail mail, HFMSFP, Hunger Mountain, Vermont College, 36 College Street, Montpelier VT, 05602. $20 entry fee.

  • Glimmer Train Open Fiction Contest -- June 30
    Prizes of $2,000, $1,000, and $600 for original, unpublished stories. All themes, all lengths are welcome. Submit online. $20.00 entry fee.

  • Literal Latté Short Shorts Contest -- June 30
    First Prize $500 for unpublished shorts, 2,000 words max. Submit to Literal Latté Awards, 200 East 10th Street, Suite 240, New York, NY 10003. $10 reading fee.

  • Money for Women/Barbara Deming Memorial Fund Individual Artist Grants for Women -- June 30
    Grants of $500 to $1,500 are awarded twice a year to feminist writers of the U.S. or Canada. Submit three copies of a manuscript of up to 25 pages, a project description, and a resume.   • Red Hen Press Literary Awards -- June 30
    Established in 2001, in celebration of the new century and a new tradition of literature, this award is for a short story with a maximum of 25 pages. Open to all writers and themes. Award is $1000 and publication of the winning story by Red Hen Press. Send to: Red Hen Press, Attn: Short Fiction Award, P.O. Box 3537, Granada Hills, CA 91394. $20 entry fee for two stories.

  • University of Pittsburgh Press Drue Heinz Literature Prize -- June 30
    For more than twenty-five years the Drue Heinz Literature Prize has recognized and supported writers of short fiction and made their work available to readers around the world. The contest, which includes a $15,000 prize and publication, is open to writers who have published a book-length collection of fiction or at least three short stories or novellas in commercial magazines or literary journals.   • University of North Texas Press Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Short Fiction -- June 30

  • Wordstock Short Fiction Competition -- June 30
