Build a Website to Promote Your Book

Wednesday May 27, 2009

If you have a book due out this fall -- or sooner -- now is the ideal time to start thinking about your website. A site offers opportunities to connect with fans and journalists, and provides a platform for all of your other efforts at book promotion. And though it may be the most important component of your PR campaign, it doesn't have to be overly complex or expensive. (In fact, over-designed sites can be slow-loading and frustrating for readers.) Instead, look for simple ways to express your creativity through your site and thus to set yourself apart from the thousands of other writers out there selling books.

Do you have advice for writers setting out to build their first website? Share cautionary tales or helpful tips below.

Hello! I think that this was great advice. Using a website to promote your book is a great way to get your name and your story out there. It’s also a refreshing change from your usual query letter. I have also decided to promote my writings through a blog at http://doseofdrama.blogspot.com which features a literary drama filled series entitled Genevieve O’Hare with a new installment/post every week on Sundays. I invite everyone to check it out! Thanks so much for your advice!

You may want to start with paying attention to the facilities provided by Amazon to authors. That will probably give you the biggest bang for your buck.

Hello, I’ve recently self-published on lulu.com and have set up a website to promote my book. Now, I still hope to find that perfect literary agent of course, but if and when the agent asks specifically if you have any connections to media or such to promote your book, is it safe to say I’ve already established a website to promote it? If you can offer me any advice, that would be great. Thanks and happy writing!

Most agents would be happy that you’ve taken the initiative and set a website, so yes, WHEN that agent asks about what you can bring to the process of promoting your book, do mention it.

Congratulations on the book and good luck with the book promotion!
