Stephenie Meyer's Next Book On Hold?

From Ginny Wiehardt, About.com GuideSeptember 4, 2008

Stephenie Meyer announced that she has quit work on her next book in the Twilight series, Midnight Sun, after a trusted reader leaked part of the book on the Internet. Meyer said that she knew who had released the partial draft, as she had only given out a few copies, each of them slightly different. "This has been a very upsetting experience for me, but I hope it will at least leave my fans with a better understanding of copyright and the importance of artistic control," Meyer wrote, according to Reuters.

I understand why she's upset -- she should get to dictate exactly when her work is made public -- but is this fair to her fans? Is this like making the whole class skip recess because one person cheated on the test? What do writers owe their fans?

I agree, It’s not fair to us in a way but I also understand where shes coming from saying ‘If she was to continue now she would make James kill the Cullens and Bella’ And of course we dont want that to happen, Lol. I say we just give Stephenie some time to get over the shock of what happened and let her work on her other books for now and we can at least hope that we’ll still get our fix of Midnight Sun.

I understand that she is hurt an upset over this, as anyone would be. I also think that writing is something you can’t force. I am hoping that after she has a while sher will want to finish the story and not let what has happened ruin this book, both for her fans and for herself.

(4) Anon says:

As an author, I understand where she is coming from. It isn’t that she intends to let her fans down, but if her motivation for writing the book is dampened by these events then she would truly be disappointing them by producing less than stellar work. Fans can be viscious creatures–take the ‘Breaking Dawn’ reception as just one example of how quickly they can turn on you. Our writing is appreciated by our fans but by no means is it written for them–and woe is the writer who hangs their merit on the masses.

I also do understand her disappointement and being very upset. I was extremely…p!issed!! when I found out a trusted friend used a few image of mine as part of his folio. But it shouldn’t be a reason for quitting working on it altogether. I hope she changes her mind soon and get back on it again. I love her books…ok..I love edward..so..I love her work.

(8) Marcy says:

I agree. I hope she changes her mind. Why did she send it out to friends in the first place? With the series having exploded like it did, I would think she would keep it ultra secret and not hand out ANY copies whatever. Excepting to people like her publisher/editor etc etc. She already knows it will be a hit. Ok, well, mainly, I’m just upset that it’s over and I want more more more!!!

(9) Sarah says:

hey, i understand what you guys are saying but just let her get over the fact that someone she thought she could trust with a draft pretty much betrayed her by putting it up without her permission!

(10) stevie says:

well i can understand where she comes from as far as being mad …..but thats life and if we all quit everytime something didnt go the way we hoped then we would still be in the stone age. she needs to get back up and keep going show that she is a strong person, she needs to come through for her fans who have been so faithful to her.

Hey Stephenie, i understand that you are upset but PLEASE don’t punish your fans for a mistake that one person made. I can honestly say that i can hardly wait for Midnight Sun to come out. I can’t get enough of Edward, I completely fell in love with his character. Take this experience as a leasson learn and just release one of the one’s that is slighty different. I’m sure we will love it. I’m begging PLEASE, PLEASE!!! restart this project again. Looking forward to standing in line to buy the book when it comes out.

(20) Margie says:

I am 44 and I love the Twilight series. I hope she keeps writing and won’t let that one individual stop her. She has so many fans. I, personally, have no desire to read a “draft” on the internet. I would prefer to pay for a copy of the finished product from a bookstore.

(21) SABRINA says:

I THINK YOU ARE RIGHT IT IS NOT FAIR BUT I BELIVE THAT SHE WILL GET Back into the the righting book becuse someone who wrights that much and has that much imaginaion should NO WILL find there way back it will find her trust me

March 12, 2009 at 2:03 pm
(22) David says:

If I understand Stephenie’s comment, she CAN’T finish the book in her current state because it would not come out the way she intends. I hope she gets the mindset back to resume her work.

I’d actually happily buy a copy of all 4 of the Twilight series from Edwards perspective, it really adds to the character development IMO plus I just can’t get enough of the series.

And Stephenie, if you read this…I think there’s a lot more of the continuing story to be told. Please continue the series.

March 19, 2009 at 2:01 pm
(23) Frost King says:

What a dilemma! As an author, she is righteously angry at the violation of her artistic endeavours. But for readers, this is like having our dessert waved in front of us and then snatched away, so the readers suffer because of the ugly acts of one individual (who isn’t suffering at all, because he or she has already managed to read the pages Stephenie had written so far.

(24) Adrianna says:

Yeah, it sucks that someone leaked the new book; terrible in fact. As a writer myself(not published or famous lol) if I was in that position I’d be devistated. On the other hand, I understand how the fans feel about having to wait for the next book. It is quite unfair, but I honestly would wait for the next book to be released when Meyer was ready and recovered. I say that because if she forced herself to finish it now just for her fan’s sake her heart might not be 100% into it, and the end product may suffer as a resault. I would rather wait and read the book that Meyer intended her fans to read rather than to read a book that’s quality suffered because of greedy fans and publishers.

March 29, 2009 at 11:52 pm
(25) kelsey says:

she really needs to finish this book, yeah so what someone leaked some of it before it was ready that just makes everyone who read it anticipate the book being released even more and will probably get her even more sales. but to people like me who are true twilight fans she has just got to finish it!!!

(26) nickie says:

~I don’t think its fair to the readers because just like movies, the directors make them but they belong to all the fans that loved them and made them popular. I completely understand why shes upset but it is completley unfair to us!

(27) katherine says:

Please keep writing the book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i love your books.I understand your upset but please write the book. I am going on STRIKE!!!!!!!!!!!

(28) Tanya says:

I think Mrs. Meyer, being an author, could write Midnight Sun in a completely DIFFERENT way she inicially wrote it. It will be the best – for herself and hers fans (including myself). Start again from zero point. Change the title. Change the focus, tell us more about Alice and Jasper history, for example… There are so many ways to continue!

May 4, 2009 at 11:01 pm
(29) starrpoint says:

It might well be that the betrayl of this trusted reader has upset her enough that she needs to take a break from it.

If she continued in this frame of mind, the book might suffer or take a different path.

She may need to stop and regroup and rebuild her support structure.

This person who leaked was a friend, and not a casual one. It would be like walking in on your husband and his lover.

(30) hailey says:

I agree and I hope that she can continue writing because i won’t read anything esle until i read all the twilight saga

(31) Bidisha says:

I totaly understand what she must have gone through and why she’s abandned the work. I absolutely LOVE the Twilight series and I cant wait to read Midnight Sun but I think that Meyer could do with some time on her own, so when the book finally does come out, the fans wont be disapointed!

(32) Stefanie says:

I read the first four books in a matter of three weeks, and when I heard there was to be a fifeth I was so happy. Now it will never be finished. I did read the first 12 chapters that Stephenie Meyers posted on her official website. But that just left me wanting more. Even though I know how it will end, it is like reading an entirely different book.

I agree that this isn’t fair. I can see where she may be upset, but don’t punish the people who are loyal fans. I have bought the first four in the series and would buy Midnight Sun if it is ever published. I just think she needs to be upset with the person who leaked it, and give her fans what they want. After all she would be nothing without fans.

It seems to me that she is acting a bit childish. Just because things didn’t go as she planned, she is throwing a temper tantrum and refusing to do any more.

PLEASE FINISH THE BOOK. I AM GOING CRAZY WAITING FOR IT!!!!!

August 14, 2009 at 9:32 pm
(33) nat says:

what does she owns to us? nothing really
yes i know, what a pain not having the book finished, i have read all the four twilight books, the host, and midnight sun’s partial draft, and i loved them badly, but i don’t think a writer should be force into finishing a book if she doesn’t want to, it’s not fair, cause after all it is HER work, and yes twilight wouldn’t be what it is without the fans, but still she could have wrote the books and not publish them, so seriously i think it’s more up to her than to anybody else, so give the woman a break and don’t push, i don’t think she owns anyone anything, we probably are the ones that own her for the books that she have finished already, as a lot of people found them entertaining, and some- even got obsess with twilight, (i am not included by the way, i loved twilight but i’m already half-over it), so don’t act like babies and start acting all mean on her just because she doesn’t feel like doing it, and also a writer’s mood affects a lot the way a book goes, so if she is angry at the moment, give her some space, she might finish it later, you know

August 27, 2009 at 4:11 pm
(34) Lauren says:

I think that Stephenie has the right to put her book on hold or never finish it if she doesn’t want to. I would like Midnight Sun to be completely finished and published. She writes for her fans so that they can enjoy stories that captivate them or just give them something to look forward to. She didn’t have to write her stories but she chose to. She wanted all of us to experience Twilight. I think it is crap that someone would cheat her and give her masterpiece away without her approval. I think that she should have all the time in the world to decide what she wants to do. If it is never done than so be it. If it takes a while at least she knows her loyal fans waited patiently.

(35) epiluitz says:

I understand Stephenie but she nedds not to worry that we won’t buy it even though most of the books already been read. I read it on her own site so I didn’t understand there was a problem until I had finished. Very many of us want to collect her books because I/we support what she does. I hope she rethinks this and understands that even though the book was leeked it’s not ruined. Maybe somehow make a deal and somehow preorder the book (prepay)without backing out could make her finish it!!! aye?

(37) Chris says:

I just finished reading “Breaking Dawn”. The end of the book left me without a conclusion. The feeling that the Volturi are still a threat makes me wonder if she is going to write another book. If she is not going to make another book then this ending has left me afraid for the Cullen family and their freinds. I know that I’m no writer but I have come up with an ending that would blow the fans way. I’m sorry that I feel the book was lacking at the very end. It turned into alot of talking when I wanted some action! The Cullens and their allies fighting next to eachother. willing to sacrifice themselves for eachother because of the bonds that had grown between them. I wanted to see that fight. I wish there was a way to change the ending.

(38) Fan of Twilight but not it's author says:

Seriously Stephenie. Get over it. Enough of the petty tantum thowing. Grow up and act like an adult. Artists of all venues get things leaked and they dont pitch a hissy fit for pete’s sake. JK Rowlings had her Deathly Hallows leaked and she handled it with grace and dignity!!!! I have no respect for Stephenie Meyers and frankly wouldnt be interested in anything she writes unless it was related to Twilight.

I, claire, have loved all of the twilight series books 5 times, so stephenie canhave time to make midnight sun, but so far i’m quoting it, not reading it. i have made paintings of the covers of all of her books, even the Host. I sobored that i am drawing people to look like vamps like alice.
I feel the pain of mrs. stephenie radiating through the books of twilight and my iphone book. let her have her time to sulk, and maybe she will realize that she made a mistake quiting on Midnight Sun. She loves us too much to do that to us, the actors who do the movies, and herself. I will wait till my heart stops beating…maybe even then.
