On the Road: The Original Scroll
Monday August 20, 2007
A recent trip to the British Library got me thinking about original manuscripts and what they can teach us about authors' working habits, so it was a pleasure to learn that we can now delve into Kerouac's original writing of On the Road through a new book, On the Road: The Original Scroll, edited by Howard Cunnell (reviewed in yesterday's New York Times). Kerouac's marathon writing of the book is now legend: he wrote the entire novel on a scroll in three weeks (after several failed drafts). If you're interested in process or are a fan of Kerouac, you'll want to check out the book -- or at least Luc Sante's review.

If you like the whole ideology behind this stuff it is interesting to see a young writer with the testicular fortitude to pursue this type of venture all the way through. Americana Literature. The only way to ensure the freedom we enjoy is to excersize it!
