Harper Lee Writes to Oprah

Saturday July 1, 2006
Breaking a forty-year silence, in which she has published only one book review, Harper Lee wrote a letter for a summer reading issue of Oprah's magazine, O. Describing how she became a reader growing up in a small, Alabama town, the eighty-year-old author of "To Kill a Mockingbird" writes, "Now, 75 years later in an abundant society where people have laptops, cell phones, iPods, and minds like empty rooms, I still plod along with books."
